Entry Requirements

You will need four GCSEs at grade C (4-5) or above (including any Science, Maths and English Language). Alternatively, you can have a BTEC Level 2 Extended Certificate in Applied Science (at Merit or above), or overseas GCSE equivalents.

Applicants will also need a good reference from a school or employer. You will complete an interview prior to enrolment.

What's Involved

Applied Science Foundation Diploma is a multidisciplinary subject covering the areas of biology, physics and chemistry. It is a rigorous, practical subject that makes students highly employable, with many of students progressing on to employment or further studies in biomedical sciences, nursing, forensic science, applied chemistry and pharmaceutical science, cosmetic, food and nutrition industries. The course is suitable for school leavers and for mature students as well. There are 4 mandatory units and 3 optional units, that students complete over the one-year period.

The course offers a mixture of hands-on work, industry visits and the academic studies.

Principles and Applications of Science (I) (90 GLH)*

Practical Scientific Procedures and Techniques (90 GLH)

Science Investigation Skills (120 GLH)

Laboratory Techniques and their Application (90 GLH)

The optional units could be chosen depending on interests and career aspirations.

Course Assessment Method

40% of the course is externally assessed (one exam and practical skills assessment task)

60% of the course is based on practical laboratory work (a portfolio of works) and continuous assignments to demonstrate your understanding of topics.

What's Next

The course is the equivalent to 1.5 A-level qualification. The progression route is on to L3 Extended Diploma, L3 apprenticeship or employment (if this is your first L3 qualification). The progression to degree level of courses or Higher apprenticeship is possible if you have already completed other relevant L3 qualifications before.
