There are no formal entry requirements however, a keen interest in the subject is essential. We will request a school or college report and you will attend an interview at the college.

What's Involved

Bricklaying is one of the traditional trades both in the UK and around the world - Sir Winston Churchill is known to have enjoyed laying bricks and building walls during his lifetime. If you are interested in becoming a bricklayer or working in associated trades this course will provide you with the basis required to commence your career. This is a practical course which will allow you to learn and develop various skills relating to the trade.

The Study programme of the level 1 Diploma in Bricklaying will consist of five key elements which you will need to complete:

> Main qualification

> Individual and group tutorial sessions

> Industry related work placement (if appropriate)

> Development of English and mathematics. You will be required to undertake a formal qualification if you have not already achieved English and/or Maths at Level 2.

> Development of enterprise and employability skills.

This is a predominately a practical based course, with the incorporation of underpinning knowledge delivered through theory sessions. Practical assessments are carried out in the college site workshop area, you will also learn the key principals and techniques to bricklaying within this area. This course is supported by individual and group tutorial sessions.

The topics typically, covered within this course include:

> Health Safety and Welfare

> Principles of construction, information and communication

> Setting out a structure

> Carry out bricklaying

> Carry out block laying

> Carry out cavity walling

It is also expected that you will attend college in suitable work wear / clothes as you will get dirty though the use of bricks and mortar.

Health and safety are of paramount importance in the construction industry and we place a great emphasis on this part of your education.

If you enrol on, and undertake any course in the construction department you will be provided with and required to wear at all times (within the college workshop area) mandatory PPE as follows:

> Approved protective footwear with ankle support (Rigger type boots are not allowed)

> Approved safety glasses

> Approved hi-visibility vest

You will undertake graded assessments through a range of methods including:

> Practical tasks

> Online Multi-Choice Test

> Paper based Tests

What's Next

You can progress on to a Level 2 Diploma in Bricklaying, or alternatively, you can obtain an employer who support you through a Level 2 Apprenticeship within bricklaying.
