Level 1 Intro to Catering and Hospitality

Entry Requirements

No formal qualifications are required, but a keen interest in this area is essential.

We will request a school or college report and all potentially suitable applicants will be invited for interview before being offered a place.

What's Involved

This qualification will give you an insight into the types of jobs that are available within the catering and hospitality industry, from a professional chef and baker to working in front of house, as well as many other job opportunities within the hospitality industry. You will be able to visit different types of catering and hospitality outlets, restaurants, hotels as well as industrial catering sites.

You will be required to participate in trips and visits which may incur costs which you be notified of in a timely manner.

The study programme will consist of (10) key elements which you will need to complete:

> Main qualification – as above

> Individual and group tutorial sessions

> Development of English and mathematics. You will be required to undertake a formal qualification if you have not already > achieved at Level 2.

> Development of enterprise and employability skills.

Teaching and learning is achieved by using a range of methods including formal classes, set tutorial periods and workshops to support many of the unit assessments.

The provisional units planned are:

> Introduction to the hospitality industry

> Customer service in the hospitality industry

> Food service

> Introduction to healthy eating

> Basic food preparation and cooking

> Preparing and serving drinks

> Introduction to pastry and cake preparation and cooking methods

> Health and safety and food safety awareness in catering

> Meal planning and preparation

> Introduction to kitchen equipment

> Introduction to food commodities

* These units may be subject to change and are only representative at this point, however we keep these as up to date as possible. You will be provided with a finalised full course overview at Connecting to College.

Course Assessment Method

You will assessed by unit tasks and assignments as well as being observed within the restaurant. You will participate in a variety of practical workshops mainly based in a practical kitchen preparing, cooking and finishing various basic dishes.

This course is portfolio based with no formal end of year exam. However, theory sessions which include presentations, group projects and Functional Skills take place within a classroom environment. You will also work in the college restaurant, The Glasshouse, both in the kitchen and front of house serving the general public.

What's Next

You could progress from this course onto a Level 2 Commis Chef, Level 2 Baker, or Level 2 Hospitality Team Member Apprenticeship.
