Level 3 Access to HE Diploma (Science)

Entry Requirements

Entry to this course requires GCSE or equivalent in Maths, English and Science at grade C/4 or above.

You must be 19 years old or older to apply for this course. For suitable courses 16-18 year olds please see our School Leavers offer.

What's Involved

This diploma has been developed to meet current demand for progression onto HE courses related to science such as the degree apprenticeships and the honours degree programmes. The structure of the diploma is such that it covers the necessary skills and knowledge to meet progression to HE requirements and the needs of adult students.

The Access to HE Diploma in science is an exciting route to higher education and a new career in a range of science disciplines. The Diploma is composed of a number of units with a level and credit value.

You will cover math’s and English to support your studies and then units in biology, chemistry and physics. There is also a focus on developing laboratory practical skills and analysis which is integral to any HE science course.

It is programme of study aimed at those returning to education. Designed to progress students to a level enabling them to embark on a degree course. The Access to Science programme is validated by One Awards.

To obtain the full Access Diploma, you will need to obtain 45 must be at Level 3 from graded units concerned with academic subject content, with the remaining 15 to be achieved at Level 2 or Level 3 from ungraded units.

This course includes the following modules/units*:


Mathematics – Number, Data Handling and Statistics, Algebra and Graphical techniques, normal distribution and testing, statistical analysis.

English – Writing skills,

Study Skills

Geography, environment and Society

Human Biology

Course Assessment Method

Assessment is ongoing throughout the year. Students will complete a portfolio of work by completing given assignments.

The assignments are designed to prepare learners for the full range of assessment methods that they will experience within university including practical lab work, presentations, written assignments, online assessments to name a few.

There is an expectation that students will work in their own time to complete the necessary reading, homework and assessment tasks. Please think carefully before undertaking a course of this nature as it is demanding and students will need to consider their work, family and other commitments.

What's Next

On completion of the Access programme, students can apply for a range of Higher Education courses. Entry requirements for Higher Education programmers can differ between institutions and staff will discuss these requirements at interview, as some universities expect students to have a grade C or above in Maths/English/Science.
