Level 3 Extended Diploma in Applied Science

Entry Requirements

You will need four GCSEs at grade C (4-5) or above (including any Science, Maths and English Language). Alternatively, you can have a BTEC Level 2 Extended Certificate in Applied Science (at Merit or above), or a BTEC level 3 90 Credit Diploma in Applied Science or overseas GCSE equivalents.

Applicants will also need a good reference from a school or employer. You will complete an interview prior to enrolment.

What's Involved

Applied Science Extended Diploma is a top up of the Applied Science Foundation Diploma for those interested in expanding L3 qualification and progressing to a degree level course in science related subjects, Higher level of Apprenticeships or employment. Highly recommended for school leavers or learners without previous L3 qualification. This is a multidisciplinary subject covering the areas of biology, physics and chemistry. It is a rigorous, practical subject that makes students highly employable, with many of students progressing on to employment or further studies in biomedical sciences, nursing, forensic science, applied chemistry and pharmaceutical science, cosmetic, food and nutrition industries.

The course is suitable for school leavers and for mature students as well.

There are mandatory units and optional units, that students complete over the two-year period (the first year is a Foundation Diploma). Mandatory units are:

The course offers a mixture of hands-on work, industry visits and the academic studies.

Year 2 (year 2 top up if learners want to continue).

There is also a variety of optional units (six units to complete over the two-year programme) from which learners can choose the most suitable for their chosen career.

Course Assessment Method

40% of the course is externally assessed (the exam and practical skills assessment task at the end of each year).

60% of the course is based on practical laboratory work (a portfolio of works) and continuous assignments to demonstrate your understanding of topics.

What's Next

Students who have completed this course have gone on to undertake careers in criminology, psychology or work in a laboratory.

The course is the equivalent to 3 A-levels qualification. The progression route is on to degree level of courses at universities, or Higher apprenticeship, or employment.

Others that have completed the Extended Diploma have gone on to study in Higher Educationand read specialist science based degrees in nursing, pharmaceutical science, forensics and vetinary nursing, biology, chemistry or biomedical science.
