Entry Requirements

You will need 4 GCSEs at grade 2 or higher, including English and maths.

We will request a school or college report and you will need to attend an interview at the college.

Progressing Learners; In addition, to demonstrate Positive Engagement & progress in English and Maths, and Good Attendance overall.

What's Involved

Almost every area of work requires information and creative technology specialists and the industry is part of life in the 21st century. This course starts you on a path leading to a broad range of careers and is of a practical nature designed to help you develop a diverse range of skills. To develop your employability opportunities you may also be given enrichment classes. This may focus upon additional qualifications, industrial updating and career preparation.

There are 2 external exams:

> The Online World

This unit provides an introduction to the modern online world. How do websites work? How do e-mails reach your computer? How does the use of computer applications effect your daily life?

> Technology Systems

This unit gives you an overview of the hardware and software used in computer systems.

There are 6 internally assessed units:

> Digital Portfolio

A digital portfolio is an onscreen way to showcase your achievements to potential employers or when applying for a course.

> Multimedia Design

In this unit, you will understand how multimedia products are used and the typical features they contain. You will design, develop and test your own multimedia products against a brief.

> Website Development

In this unit, you will investigate the features and uses of websites by exploring what they are and how their integrated

components and applications interact with each other. You will also learn how to design, develop and test a website for a brief.

> Spreadsheet Development

In this unit you will understand the many uses for spreadsheets and the tools and techniques that are available and become skilled at using them. You will be able to apply some of your findings to your own spreadsheet solutions.

> Software Development

In this unit, you will learn the rules of a programming language and how to write code to develop a successful program. You will be able to apply some of your findings to your own software solutions.

> Installing and maintaining computer hardware

In this unit, you will install and maintain hardware in a technology system. This will involve finding and repairing faults with the internal hardware components of a computer and upgrading other internal and external components.

Course Assessment Method

There are 2 exams. An electronic portfolio of evidence will be generated throughout the course as written and practical assignments are completed.

What's Next

Career opportunities exist to enter the industry at junior level in many job roles, including:

> Games tester

> Web designer

> IT technician

> IT administration roles

We do recommend further study by progressing onto the next level qualification, or alternatively into an Apprenticeship, if you are wishing to progress within these roles.

What does it Cost?

This course is free if you are 16-18 years of age on August 31 of the calendar year in which you begin your studies. If you are 19+ years of age fees may apply. However help may be available. To see if you can receive any funding call our Student Services Team on 01325 503030.

Course fees are payable to Darlington College. Registration and membership fees may be payable. All course fees are per year.
