What's Involved

Course overview

This qualification will develop your knowledge and skills relating to the clinical health care workforce and also the skills required to work in a range of clinical environments and carry out assessments or examinations.

The Diploma in Healthcare Support study programme will consist of 5 key elements which you will need to complete:

> Main qualification – as above

> Individual and group tutorial sessions

> Industry related work placement

> Development of English and mathematics.

Course content is made up of 1 day in college and to attend a variety of placements that reflect the changing Healthcare profession.

We offer numerous work experience placements to students who undertake this course. These placements are tailored to meet the needs of the individual. Some examples of current placements are:

> Phlebotomy Assistant – Darlington Memorial Hospital

> Occupational Therapy – Community Care placements

> Rehabilitation – drug and alcohol services in Darlington

> Residential Care – Care homes

> PTS – Patient Transport Services

This course covers a range of topics including gaining an insight into a Healthcare working environment, supporting individuals with day to day activities and understanding mental health and well-being.

Learning will take place via theoretical learning in the classroom and via placement learning. A variety of teaching methods are implemented in order to offer maximum learning opportunities throughout this course including workshops, seminars, IT sessions, one to one tutorials and practical sessions

Entry Requirements

5 GCSE subjects with 4 points or C grade and above, including 4 points or C grade in GCSE English or an appropriate Level 2 qualification (at a merit if graded) and a satisfactory school report.

You must also supply details of two personal referees who are not relatives, so that the college can formally write to them to obtain up to date references to support your application.

We will request a school or college report and you will attend an interview at the college.

To complete the placement aspect of this course, you will be required to complete an enhanced disclosure DBS check. We will contact you prior to enrolment to arrange this check. Please do not purchase your DBS through an external company as external DBS checks may not be accepted by us or our placement settings.

Course Assessment Method

You will be assessed by your tutor or assessor from your workplace practice using a portfolio of evidence, practical demonstrations and assignments.

What's Next

This qualification will enable you to progress on to the Extended Diploma in Health and Social Care or to pursue a career within the health sector such as a Phlebotomist, Assistant Dietician, Medical Laboratory Assistant, New-born Hearing Screener, Nursing Healthcare Assistant, or Podiatry Assistant.
