Slipper Day at Darlington College

Students left their slippers on for a day to support homeless children at Christmas.

Over £100 was raised by students and staff at Darlington College for the Shelter charity.

The Level 3 Diploma in Specialist Support Teaching and Learning in Schools students, who work with children aged from five to 16, organised the event and raised a total of £104 by placing donation buckets around the college.

Emma Clegg, programme leader of the course, said: “My students are passionate about working with children and young people, and are currently have two days a week of work placement in schools with children from different backgrounds and age ranges. We have raised money for other children’s charities in the past, such as Children in Need.

“My students are aware that children today can have many challenges in their lives and how important it is for teaching assistants to be knowledgeable of the issues that can affect a child’s learning abilities.”

Shelter was launched in 1966 and the campaigners and volunteers have helped over 5m people dealing with homelessness and poverty in the past 50 years. They give advice to the people and help re-home children and families.
